The group stages are over, after watching some of the games and mostly highlights (unfavorable time difference here in Sydney:( ) of this 2014 World Cup. I’ve selected teams made of the best Adidas and Nike XI players that have impressed me based on the brand of shoes they wear.

The marketing war between Adidas and Nike is well documented. Now let’s see which brand has picked the right players to sponsor.

 Team Adidas

Vincent Enyeama
Mats Hummels, Daniel Van Buyten, Hector Moreno
Philipp Lahm, James Rodriguez, Thomas Mueller, Arjen Robben,
Lionel Messi, Robin van Persie, Karim Benzema

Team Nike

Guillermo Ochoa
Serge Aurier, Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Jerome Boateng
Arturo Vidal, Sami Khedira, Ivan Perisic, Xherdan Shaqiri
Alexis Sanchez, Neymar
No Cristiano Ronaldo, Iniesta or Rooney as carrying their team was too difficult even for them.

Head to Head

Goalkeeper – Nike

Both Ochoa and Enyeama played equally well. Props to Ochoa to be able to have a strong performance against the host nation Brazil.

Defenders – Nike

Nike’s defense is very solid with the two centre backs having goal potential in set pieces and two pacy and good passers of the ball as full backs. Nike wins.

Midfielders – Adidas

Forwards – Adidas

Neymar the Brazilian wonderboy is living up to the fans expectations so did fellow South American Alexis Sanchez. Messi has just as much pressure on his shoulders and is still delivering, even carrying Argentina by himself at times. Van Persie is back to this best and Benzema is goal machine despite his critics.

End of the Day

Nike’s defensive line up is world class despite this with the stricking force of Robben, Messi and van Persie no defense would be confident of not conceding goals. Leading goal soccer James Rodriguez is the surprise package of the tournament so far and a big win for Adidas. Overall I think team Adidas is stronger and I predict the final score to be 4 – 2 to Adidas.

Who is missing from the each team? Do you agree Adidas is stronger? leave a comment 🙂
